I am looking for a load using 180 hornady XTP, federal large pistol primers, and for powder i have 800X and hodgdon Longshot. I am hoping to be able to use one of these powders (the reason i have these powders is I have them for reloading my 28ga shotgun). I am looking for a load that is gonna do about 1150 to 1250 fps.

By the way I am new to reloading for pistols but for rifle's i have been reloading since about 1981

8.5-9.0gr of 800x will get you to those velocities, but I believe 8.7 is listed as Max. I've used it a 9.0 with no issues. 9.0-9.6gr of Longshot will also be in the range for the velocities you are after.

Mike McNett of Double Tap uses 10.8 grains of 800X with a 180 gr. XTP for 1250 fps in a G29! :horror020: :TS2: :pirate41: You will easily get another 75 fps in a G20 bbl. Hi Velocity at low pressure. That's what 800X is famous for. It just meters poorly.
And he uses a magnum primer CCI-350 Magnum primer with a OAL of 1.260"

In my experience, 11.0 grains of Blue Dot is close to ideal with the 180's.

Speer #14 actually list the 180 Gold Dot with 11.0 graind of Blue Dot @ 1295 fps.

I too have used 11.0 grains with the 180 Hornady XTP's from my S&W 1006.

I'm beginning to feel like a spammer, and I apologize for resurrecting old threads, but here I go again: I found it useful to put all (or most, I generally omitted data without OAL, powders I'll never use, etc.) the 180 gr data from the web, Lee 2nd, Alliant 2011, Hornady 8th, Speer 14, Lyman 49, VihtaVuori 8, Accurate Arms 3.4, LoadBook 2004, Quickload, etc., in a Google Doc. This document was well received at a Glock forum I frequent, so I thought I'd share it on this forum. The document is available here. The tab at the bottom labelled "Recipes 180 gr" is the one currently of interest. It's handy to sort by powder, bullet, source, and so forth. I'll be doing the same for 200, 165, 155, and 135 when I start loading those. I plan to add to these recipes as time and availability allows, so if you have some you want included, feel free to IM me.

Disclaimers: these are not my loads, I cannot vouch for them, some of them are beyond book values, indeed some look crazy to me. Some of these loads may damage you or your gun, please observe all safety rules for reloading, including but not limited to starting at least 10% below max loads, work up slowly, and recognize that these loads will give varying results if you use different primers, guns, and so forth. I am not responsible for any harm that results from use of this data.

I load my Lyman cast 175's TCBB bullets using 10.4grains of Blue Dot with CCI300 LP they run in the 1150fps range, mine have been very accurate. The 180's should also work very well with that loading.

Good luck!

Anybody tried this load ---> Same bullet, primer, etc., as above (McNett's), except instead of using 800X powder, it's 10.8/10.9gns of AA7.

Anyone know velocity, pressure issues? Out of a G20 or G29 ...

Thanks! :thumb:

I have loaded 9.4 grains of 800X behind the 200 XTP with CCI350 LP, that yields 1250 fps based on what I have seen this is a good load.

I can say if this load posted is safe...

Any favorites for AA#7 and 180 power bonds?

Not looking for nuclear, but close?

I'm running basically the same load as The Shadow: 10.2 grains of Blue Dot with a 175 grain RNFP with a 1.255" COL. Very accurate and controllable even when shooting strong-hand only.

I sed AA#9 instead, but I believed I used about 10.5 grains of #7 long ago. I now use Blue Dot.

I've got a bunch of 800x but haven't yet tried it in my 10mm.  I'll load some if the weather warms up...and take my chrony and see what I get.
