Earlier this year, Old Elk came to us with the very last of their wheated MGP-distilled Bourbon inventory they plan on releasing for the next year-plus. While we’re waiting for the rest of their Bourbon to catch up in age, enjoy this delicious 7 year old cask strength delight—the oldest we’ve sourced from Old Elk so far. The nose is like creme brulée and peanuts with plenty of sweet oak. The initial sip brings a big punch and you’ll quickly discover this is not a barrel that necessarily shines as an uncut, cask strength specimen. Add a few drops of water, however, and you’re bowled over with maple syrup, brandied cherries, and a supremely oaky sweetness that lasts for a full minute on the finish. If you’re a rocks drinker, this whiskey will be your go-to. By the time the ice melts, it’s in the perfect place for maximum flavor.
